ECO TIP #2 – Investing in a Water Filter

Water is the vital generator of life and without water on Earth, life would have been impossible. Even if we need water to live, we often question ourselves about the safety of the water that we drink, this is why we end up stocking on plastic bottled water from store but this has such an adverse effect on the environment.

Our natural water resources are under a great deal of stress, as we battle with an ever changing climate, pollution and the needs of a rapidly growing population. Demand for quality drinking water has never been greater!

Our government has a duty to provide us with water that is safe to drink, however the water quality at the point of consumption may not always be complimentary for our short or long-term health. Contaminants including heavy metals, chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides, bacteria, organic & in-organic compounds all can be present in our drinking water. If you’re unsure about what a water filtering system is to begin with, here are the basic. In its simplest form, a water filter helps decontaminate water by either using a physical barrier, chemical process, or a biological process.

People use water filter systems for a variety of different reasons :

1 - Water filtration can provide better tasting and better smelling drinking water by removing chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals and bacterial contaminants. Better water, better health!

2 - A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis. Having a refillable re-usable water bottle and a filter will be saving you money in the long run and you will be drastically cutting down on your plastic consumption, win-win!

3 - One of the less reputed benefits of a counter top water filter is that it will help you drink more water. Reviews of water filters have shown that people are surprised by the increase in their water intake after purchasing their new filter. Having mineral-rich clean drinking water at the ready in your kitchen, means you don’t have to run to the shops to stock on bottled water or reach for that unpleasant tap water when you’re in need of hydration.

Here are some most common types of water filter :

Activated Carbon

The activated carbon filter is one of the most common household water filters. This type of filter uses activated carbon granules that attract and trap chemical impurities through an absorption process.

Ion Exchange

Ion Exchange filters are some of the best filters for softening water. They can take hard water and make it more digestible by removing lime scale. In layman’s terms, these filters are designed to split apart atoms of contaminating substances to make ions, then, then traps those ions and releases less good ions.

Distillation

This is one of the simplest ways to purify water. While this is less of a type of filter and more of a way to filter water on your own without the use of a fancy device, distillation is still one of the best ways to filter or purify water.

Distillation involves boiling the water, but then taking things a step further to ensure purity. First, you boil water to make steam, much as you would boil it to kill the bacteria.
